While it’s easy to talk about creating large scale projects, it’s much harder to take the practical steps necessary to turn an idea into reality.

It’s a complex process that takes commitment, determination, and high levels of technical expertise. It also requires careful handling of relationships with other stakeholders, including landowners and local communities.

Tribus Clean Energy is one of very few businesses that has taken large scale solar and battery projects from initial concept all the way through the consenting process.

The first step is to identify potential locations for large scale solar and battery sites. This is not as easy as it might appear. Grid connection capacity is scarce and requires developers to make use of existing capacity in the network to connect new sources of energy.

We actively seek out appropriate locations that are suitable for development as a viable investment.

Due to the scale of our projects, some are classified as Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs). This means that a detailed and rigorous planning process must be completed. The Planning Inspectorate oversees the process. For energy infrastructure projects, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero has the final say.

Key stages are

Pre-application

Before any application is made, consultation with the local community is required. This is also the stage where the environmental assessments are undertaken to inform communities and decision makers. So, from the outset, plans must be prepared that summarise the project and its planning requirements, allowing us to gain valuable feedback on our approach.

16 to 18 months (variable)

Acceptance

Following what can be a lengthy consultation process, the Planning Inspectorate decides whether to accept the application for examination. This involves them checking to ensure that adequate consultation and robust environmental assessments have taken place.

28 days (Statutory timeframe)

Pre-examination

At this stage, interested parties can make official comments and submissions to the Planning Inspectorate about the proposal.

3 to 6 months (variable)

Examination

An Examining Authority considers the proposal itself and all relevant evidence, including submissions made by interested parties.

6 months (Statutory timeframe)

Recommendation and Decision. 

Ultimately, the Examining Authority makes a recommendation to the Secretary of State, who has the final power to authorise or decline the proposal.

Recommendation: 3 months (Statutory timeframe) and Decision: 3 months (Statutory timeframe)

Post Decision.

Once the Secretary of State has made their decision, there is a fixed period where a legal challenge can be made.
